The American psychiatrist Karl Menninger, in his book Man against Himself, extended Freud's concept of the death instinct and hypothesized that three elements exist in constantly shifting patterns in all self-destructive behavior—the wish to kill, the wish to be killed, and the wish to die.
In the literature the focus tends to be on rapid change experienced by individuals either up or down the social structure. By engaging in the same activities and rituals, people in traditional societies shared common moral values, which Durkheim called a collective conscience modern sociologists would refer to them as the norms and values of society, which are internalized by individuals.
For example, Luther and Calvin evolved religious ideas that developed into an asceticism that allowed capitalism to establish itself and become the dominant social and economic structure in the West. As with nationalism, faith is secured by appeals to emotion, not critical thinking.
But Durkheim goes further. Many will find this uncertainty anxiety-provoking, and will look around for a convenient escape. But this state of incertitude and confused agitation cannot last for ever. On the basis of the analysis of a mass of data gathered by him on many societies and cultures, Durkheim identified three basic types of suicides. As a reprieve from his apparent harassment of religion, Marx softens his critiques by telling us one of the primary purposes for religious beliefs: The power of the community or society over the individual so transcends individual existence that people collectively give it sacred significance.
